Recap: First Virtual Season of Saturday Morning Live!

The National Theatre’s flagship community and education program, Saturday Morning Live! At The National, has successfully completed its first ever virtual season. From Oct 2020 through May 2021, The National Theatre premiered 15 different Theatre for Young Audiences episodes on our Facebook page. Each series of three episodes was created by a different partner and utilized distinct art forms, including hip-hop, animation, puppetry, storytelling, and dance. Despite their varied styles, every series was centered on the idea that young people need our care and attention during this difficult time.

The Saturday Morning Live! artists understood that the pandemic has been particularly difficult for kids. In their own way, each episode acknowledged the many emotions felt throughout the year; sadness, anxiety, frustration, and boredom to name a few! They invited kids to be creative, try new things, get outside, and use their imaginations. While the episodes were fun and colorful, they were earnest shows that address current topics in an age appropriate manner.

There are lots of lessons to be gained from the inaugural virtual season and we will continue to explore these topics and more in our 2021 – 2022 virtual season.

Paige Hernandez taught us how important it is to take time to take care of ourselves, try new things, and dream for the future.

David Gonzalez’s crazy characters reminded us that it is okay to be who we are, even when other people may expect us to be something different.

Northwestern University’s company members showed us that no matter where we may be on the coaster of emotions, we can take some deep breaths and know that we are not alone in how we feel.

Arts on The Horizon’s company members inspired us to go outside, connect with friends, and tap into our imaginations.

We hope you enjoyed our virtual season of Saturday Morning Live! At The National. All of this season’s episodes are available to watch on Facebook, YouTube, and on our website. Remember, “Change can be good”, “It’s okay not to know”, “You be you, I’ll be me.”, and “You are enough”!

Stay tuned for announcements about next season premiering in Oct. 2021!
