Hi! I'm BARRYMORE B. EAGLE
I
am the Mascot and Official Greeter for the National Theatre in Washington,
D.C. The "B." stands for "Bald," because I am
a bald eagle -- although I'm not really bald. Thank you for coming
here to visit my page!
I am an actor, and I starred in patriotic pageants during the opening
season at the National Theatre in 1835. My first cousin, the Official
Bird of the United States, is carved over the proscenium arch of
the theatre, and appears on our marquee and tickets and Playbills.
That's him at the top of this page. Don't tell anyone, but I say
that it's me! Well, it really is, because I spread my wings and
posed in his place on the day they made the original drawing. (He
was away on "official business" with the Congress!)

In
1998, I became the Theatre’s OFFICIAL GREETER. I don't talk
in public because I think that everyone else talks enough already
(especially here in Washington!). I like to listen, anyway.
I love people, and especially kids. Sometimes I forget that I am
a bird when I'm with them. They bring out the child in me .... my
..... inner child??!! I am occasionally bashful, and sometimes get
into mischief -- but then, DON'T WE ALL?

My
favorite shows are Bye, Bye, Birdie, Aristophanes’ The Birds,
Tchaikowsky's Swan Lake, Chekhov's The Seagull, One Flew Over the
Cuckoo's Nest, Andrew Lloyd Webber's CATS and Disney's The Lion
King.
I'm a pretty big bird, so I am not afraid of cats or lions, and
we all get along fine. In fact, every once in a while when I fly
up to New York, my god-parents at Disney's New Amsterdam Theatre
let me appear in the "Circle of Life" scene coming down
the aisle in The Lion King. But you wouldn't recognize me in my
costume up there, because I play an African dove, and I can't wear
my three-cornered hat!
On TV I like Bear and the Big Blue House, and I got to meet Bear.
He's very nice.

As
a bald eagle, I am very proud of my species which is the symbol
of our American Dream, and I'm happy to live here in Washington,
our capital city. It's a nice place, and if you don't live here,
you should come visit, because it's YOUR capital, too!
Here I am with my favorite CATS: Grizabella, Rum-Tum Tiger, and
Old Deuteronomy.

In
1998, I got to go to the Ellipse right next to The White House and
help President and Mrs. Clinton light the National Christmas Tree!
Tony Bennett and Jose Feliciano and the CATS and the Biggles from
California and Bear from his Blue House and lots of children were
all there, too, and we had a whole lot of fun together.
Here I am shaking hands with President Clinton. March is STAGES
FOR ALL AGES month here in Washington, and there will be great shows
and special tickets for kids, so watch for the announcements on
the METRO cars and in The Washington Post!
Occasionally I am able to make an appearance at important events
in the city, so if you want to invite me to participate in your
event, please let me know!
I would love to hear from you, so please e-mail
me or write:
