This weekly showcase in the Fall, Winter and Spring, features local performers, and provides free quality live entertainment to the Greater Washington Area community. Original plays, singers, musical ensembles, dance, drama and comedy are on the bill.

SEP 24 - At the National Press Club - Morrow Room
SAHARA DANCE: THE ART OF ORIENTAL DANCE
Grounded in the traditional elements and technique of the "belly dance," this company adds graceful and dynamic contemporary influences from diverse dance styles including Egyptian Raqs Sharqi, Beledi, Oriental Lyrical, American-Tribal and "Belly-Brazilian." The dancers promote the transformative power of these dances to motivate creative self-discovery and joyful expression.

 

OCT 1 - At the National Press Club - Morrow Room
COLLATERALLY DAMAGED
Art, sex, and genocide: In this almost completely autobiographical one-person play, written and performed by LAURA ZAM, the playwright and performer journeys to Eastern Europe seeking an end to all war, and even a cessation of random acts of rudeness. She encounters sad and ridiculous things done by people who've been abused -- in this astonishing travelogue of heart and mind. A comedy. Sort of. and above age advisory

 

 

OCT 15 - At the National Press Club - Morrow Room
HEXAGONERS
Music! Dancing! Political Satire! These farceurs do it all, reprising scintillating numbers from the popular and successful 2007 all-singing, all-dancing, all humorous HEXAGON review. Capitol Hill, Washington neighborhoods and the follies of Blackberrys, Congressional shenanigans, DC puffery and all things au courant are mercilessly satirized.

HITHER DITHER & YON

Three lusty wenches – ANNIE LAURIE, MAD MAGGIE and MISTRESS MOIRE - sing a raft of raucous Renaissance tavern songs, some traditional, some original. The ladies are a tad saucy, a bit bawdy, a lot naughty but nevertheless nice: the perfect mixture of sugar and spice! You can join in on some of the drinking songs. and above age advisory

 


OCT 29 - In the Helen Hayes Gallery
HALLOWEEN: MYSTERIOUS MAGIC
Prepare to be astounded as BARRY AND SUSAN TAYLOR demonstrate ghostly transformations, incredible escapes, confounding card wizardry and clairvoyant communications from beyond the pale. See a host of spooky objects appearing, metamorphosing and vanishing in an astonishing seance of mystifying and totally strange happenings. Come in costume if you like!

A NIGHT OF WINE AND ROSES
Tenor CRISTOFORO PADULA sings luxuriant and romantic songs of passion from opera to pop. Among them are Parlez moi d'amour, How Are Things in Glocca Morra?, Speak Softly Love, Torna a Surriento and Ah Marie. He will warm your heart and take your breath away. GARY SCHWARTZ sparkles at the piano. The Helen Hayes Gallery Bar will be open tonight only, serving wine, mixed drinks, coffee and confections.

CLARA BARTON: RED CROSS ANGEL

Miss Barton defied society’s conventions and risked her life in order to help others. MARY ANN JUNG brings to life this passionate woman who became the first female Federal Government employee, and America’s first woman ambassador. Follow her dangerous Civil War nursing and her heroic struggle to get America to sign the Geneva Convention and join the International Red Cross.

THE SAMA ENSEMBLE

Enjoy a concert of pulse-raising music performed under the direction of ALI REZA ANALOUEI and NASER KHORASANI. This group plays on tomak drums and large ringed daf drums, and incorporates vocal melodies as well. The ensemble's style reflects influences of the transcendental Erfaan philosophy and the whirling ritual dances of the Sufis.

SONGS FOR THE SEASON

Beyond the mistletoe, merriment and tinsel, KRISTY GLASS takes us on a musical journey into the true heart of the holidays. She is joined by the Primary Chorus from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Her candle-light concert of high-soprano sacred music will surely leave you moved, inspired and ready for a joyous Christmas. Bring family and friends. Take happiness home.

CHRISTMAS WITH THE CAMERATA

Join the Washington MEN'S CAMERATA for a festive concert of international
delights with yuletide songs and carols from around the globe. You'll hear familiar favorites, including music from England, Germany, France and other far-flung places. You'll also be able to join the Camerata in singing some of your favorite traditional carols!
