John Barrymore was Icarus who flew so
close to the sun that the wax on his wings melted and he plunged
back to earth -- from the peak of classical acting to the banalities of show
business.
-- Brooks Atkinson, Broadway

Barrymore, a one-man tour de force starring the inimitable Christopher Plummer, is the first production co-presented by two of Canada's most esteemed theatrical organizations: Livent Inc. and the Stratford Festival. It also represents the first time playwright William Luce, whose previous hits have provided vibrant biographical sketches of such diverse legends as Emily Dickinson, Lillian Hellman, Zelda Fitzgerald, General Patton and Wallis Warfield Simpson, has focused his talents on the life of an actor.
Set in 1942, the final year of John Barrymore's life, Barrymore takes place during one evening on the stage of a New York City theatre as he rehearses one of his most famous roles, Richard III. As the evening progresses, John Barrymore playfully reminisces about the triumphs and disappointments of his illustrious, but deeply troubled life, commenting with both humour and pathos, on his four marriages, his sister Ethel and brother Lionel, and recalling many of his famous friends and colleagues.
Yet, despite the darkness of John Barrymore's life, William Luce's superb examination demonstrates that the tragedy was blended with a healthy dose of comedy.

FUN."

THE PLAYWRIGHT - William Luce, who explored the life of poet Emily Dickinson in his play The Belle of Amherst, has created a charmingly intimate and entertaining evening where we meet Barrymore at an important moment at the end of his career. Although his prodigious talent may have been diminished by time, he has lost none of his caustic wit, his passion for the art, nor his voracious appetite for life.
