17 June - O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU?
In
this update of Homer's "The Odyssey," set in the 1930's
Depression-era deep South, three misfit convicts endeavor to escape
from a chain gang. They seek freedom and a fortune in buried treasure.
Shackled, but with nothing to lose, they make a hasty run for their
lives and find themselves on a harrowing adventure, pursued by a
cunning and mysterious lawman determined to capture them. Enjoy
the chase!

This
movie classic traces the meteoric rise of publishing mogul Charles
Foster Kane from humble origin to fame and riches. With its many
remarkable performances and cinematic innovations in photography,
editing, and sound, this film is often rated the best movie ever
made. The director, star, and producer are all one: the genius Orson
Welles, making his Hollywood debut at age 25! Rosebud rules!

8 July - DO THE RIGHT THING
Smoldering
tensions between Blacks and Italians in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood
of Brooklyn explode when the owner of Sal's Famous Pizzeria refuses
to place photos of of prominent African Americans on his shop's
"Wall of Fame." One hot day will change lives and a neighborhood
forever. Humor, drama, and music are ingeniously combined by director
Spike Lee in this tour de force take on racism.

15 July - CAMILLE starring GRETA GARBO
Based
on the novel and play by Alexandre Dumas, this glorious costume
drama is a monument to 1930s romantic glamour. The incomparable
Garbo stars as the beautiful courtesan Marguerite Gautier, who is
destroyed by her love for a young French nobleman, Armand, portrayed
by the dashing Robert Taylor. Opulent settings and larger-than-life
passions create a glittering world of elegance and noble sacrifice.

22 July - WIT
Vivian
Bearing is a professor of 17th Century poetry, specializing in "the
Holy Sonnets of John Donne." The intellect is everything to
Vivian. Diagnosed with life-threatening cancer, she agrees to undergo
aggressive chemotherapy in the name of cancer research. "You
must be very tough," her doctor warns. But Vivian finds that
what she needs most isn't her usual cold rationality but the human
kindness shown by her nurse.

29 July - TEA WITH MUSSOLINI
In
the sunny Florence of 1934, a group of cultured ladies meet daily
for tea. Lady Random is the widow of the British Ambassador. Arabella
is an artist. Georgie is an American Archaeologist. Elsa is the
rebel, and Mary is the surrogate mother of a young boy, Luca. He
is "adopted" by all the ladies. Shifting political winds
chill this unconventional community, and the maturing Luca faces
a personal challenge to his independence.

The
excitement is electric and the competition fierce in this canny
comedy, as as canine contestants arrive for the prestigious Mayflower
Dog Show. Backstage handlers primp, pamper and prime their precious
pooches as tension grows among bleary-eyed bloodhounds, prissy poodles
and neurotic Weimaraners -- not to mention their temperamental and
testy owners. This outrageous "dogumentary" will have
you barking in the aisles.

Author
Alice Walker’s story of suffering, endurance and triumph is

all, however, she grows into a woman of self-assurance and wit,

About Summer Cinema at the National...
Free
films are shown at the National Theatre during summer months. Performances
are at 6:30 pm on Monday evenings in the Helen Hayes Gallery, where
the national portrait of Miss Hayes is displayed. Admission is free,
on a first-come, first-seated basis. The series was inaugurated
in 1985.
