The Shubert Organization is the largest theater owner on the "Great
White Way." In addition to producing plays, the organization
owns 16 Broadway theatres, among them the Cadillac Winter Garden
Theatre (which hosted Cats, the longest-running play in
Broadway history, and Mamma Mia!), the Bernard B. Jacobs
Theatre, the Broadway Theatre, the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, the
Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, the Little Shubert Theatre and the Lyceum
Theatre. The Shubert Archives, available to theatre scholars, is
located in the upper floors of the Lyceum Theatre.
The organization also manages the National Theatre in Washington,
DC and the Forrest Theatre in Philadelphia, and has real estate
holdings including New York's Sardi Building, where Shubert offices
are housed.
Founded in 1973, the Shubert Organization's roots go back to the
late 19th century when brothers Levi, Samuel and Jacob Shubert launched
their theatre empire.

On December 12, 1996, the National
Theatre dedicated one of its orchestra seats to the memory
of Bernard B. Jacobs, President and co-Chief Executive Officer
of the Shubert Organization, who passed away in 1996. The
inscription on the seat reads:
BERNARD B. JACOBS
The Shubert Organization
Producer, Visionary and Champion
of the American Theatre
1916-1996
Mr. Jacobs was an astute impresario whose love and passion
for theatre did much to shape the American professional theatre
at the end of the 20th century. He made a significant contribution
to the revival of the Broadway theatre, and the 42nd Street
and Times Square Theatre District.
He was a legendary, forceful personality who will be long
remembered and fondly missed.
Mrs. Jacobs, Bernie's beloved wife joined Mr. Gerald Schoenfeld,
Chair, Mr. Philip Smith, President and Mr. Robert Wankel,
Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of The
Shubert Organization, in Washington for the dedication. |
